School officials said the district will operate on a normal schedule despite the heat, offering water to students and staff and monitoring temperatures throughout the week. Officials released the following statement: City Schools will open on the regular schedule on Monday, August 29. We know that many of our classrooms can be uncomfortable as the temperature climbs. But we also want to get the new school year off to a smooth start, without the disruption that happens when schools close or dismiss early. There will be plenty of water at all schools for students and staff all week, and we will be watching the weather carefully. If the heat does become extreme, we may make the decision to close schools or dismiss early later this week. If that happens, we will notify families, students, and staff as early as possible by email, phone or text message, social media and website announcements, and on local radio and t.v. stations. Thank you, and see you in school tomorrow!

Elias Abboud, who worked with the sisters for years and helped build the Lexington Medical Clinic, said he’s not sure what will happen to the facility in light of their deaths. “I think the community is going to be different after this. You need somebody with that passion to love the people and work in the underserved area,” Abboud said. “For somebody to come and do this horrible act, we are all shocked,” he added. Authorities did not release a cause of death, but the Rev. Greg Plata said police told him the nuns were stabbed. Their bodies were taken to a state crime lab for autopsies. “They were two of the sweetest, most gentle women you can imagine. Their vocation was helping the poor,” said Plata, who oversees a 35-member Catholic church the sisters attended. Maureen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Jackson, said there were signs of a break-in at the home and the nuns’ car was taken.

pope.rancis,.ddress to Seminarians and Novices, July 6, 2013 Catechetical Series on Vocations The USC CB is pleased to highlight various ways that vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life can be promoted by featuring resources that are currently used by archdioceses and dioceses throughout the United States, or available through various organizations. The word vocation derives from the Latin vocare “to call.” The elements of this vocation are all the interior and exterior helps, the efficacious graces which have led to the taking of the resolution, and all the graces which produce meritorious perseverance. For it is better to marry than to be burnt” 1 Corinthians 7:9 . vii, viii P.L., CLXXXII, 242 seq., 249 seq., of which the last two date only from the twelfth century, and are capable of another explanation, cannot be seriously quoted as representing vocation as practically obligatory . For someone who has chosen a single life, even though they have not formally taken the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, yet they make a personal commitment to put their freedom at the service of others in their work and prayer. We shall, in this chapter, discuss the problem of vocation for women under present conditions.
